Garage Door Won't Open? 7 Things to Check Before You Call

Before you assume the worst, run through these quick checks. A few are simple fixes you can do yourself — and we'll tell you when it's time to call.

Garage Door Won't Open? 7 Things to Check Before You Call

A garage door that won't open always seems to happen when you're in a hurry. Before you assume the worst, here are seven things to check — several are quick fixes you can do in a minute.

1. Check the remote and keypad batteries

It sounds obvious, but dead remote or keypad batteries are one of the most common culprits. Try the wall button — if that works but the remote doesn't, you've found your problem.

2. Look for the disconnect cord

That red cord hanging from the opener rail manually disconnects the door. If it's been pulled (kids love it), the opener runs but the door won't move. Re-engage it with the door fully closed.

3. Inspect the photo-eye sensors

The small sensors near the floor on each side must “see” each other. If they're misaligned, dirty, or blocked, the door won't close (and sometimes won't operate). Wipe the lenses and make sure they line up.

4. Check the power

Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power — a tripped breaker or an unplugged unit happens more often than you'd think.

5. Test the wall switch lock

Many wall consoles have a “lock” or vacation button that disables remotes. If someone pressed it, your remotes will stop working until it's unlocked.

6. Listen when you press the button

If the opener hums or strains but the door barely moves — or you heard a bang earlier — you may have a broken spring or cable. Stop here and call us; forcing it can cause damage or injury.

7. Look at the tracks and rollers

A door that's crooked, stuck, or grinding may be off its track. Don't force it — that's a quick way to bend panels.

Still stuck? That's what we're here for. Call or text 714-878-5928 and we'll get it sorted — usually same-day.
